Floods damaged around 15,761 hectares of farmland in several districts of South Sulawesi, especially Luwu, Wajo and Sidrap, a provincial offficial said.
But despite the damage, South Sulawesi was still expected to achieve its annual dried unhulled paddy production target of around 3.9 million tons, Lutfi Halide, head of the provincial agricultural and horticultural office , said here on Thursday.
"We are optimistic we will reach our paddy production target," Lutfi said.
Paddy plants on about 6,000 hectares of fields in the three districts were lost in the floods, he said.
The provincial adminstration was now planning to distribute 4,100 paddy seedlings to farmers in compensation for the lost plants. Lutfi said.
Larompong Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Alwi said recently that landslides and floods had killed 13 people and affected at least 30 villages in five sub districts, Luwu District, around 300 km from Makassar, South Sulawesi`s provincial capital, over the past three days.
In addition to South Sulawesi, other provinces in Indonesia, including Central Sulawesi, North Maluku, North Sumatra, North Sulawesi, Aceh and West Kalimantan, were also hit by floods and landslides recently.
The worst-hit area was Morowali district in Central Sulawesi, where 58 people were reportedly killed and tens of others missing. (*)
